Your Google Business Profile is the most important local SEO asset you control. More than your website, more than your social media, the profile determines whether you show up in the Map Pack when someone nearby searches for what you do. Here is a field-by-field checklist to make sure yours is doing its job.

Categories

Set one precise primary category — the most specific accurate description of your main service. Then add up to eight secondary categories for related services. Avoid padding with categories that do not match your business; it confuses Google. Check what categories your top competitors use and match the most relevant ones.

Business name

Use your real, legal business name — nothing more. Do not stuff keywords like "Best Plumber NYC" into the name field. Google can suspend profiles for keyword stuffing, and it also looks untrustworthy to customers. Your name should match your storefront, website, and every other directory listing exactly.

Address and service area

If you have a physical location customers visit, enter the precise address and verify it matches your website. If you are a service-area business (you go to the customer), hide the address and define the specific towns, boroughs, or ZIP codes you serve. Do not claim a service area larger than you actually cover — it hurts relevance for the areas you do serve.

Hours

Set accurate hours for every day, including weekends. Update them for holidays using the Special Hours feature. Incorrect hours are one of the fastest ways to lose customer trust and earn negative reviews. A "closed" message when you are actually open sends customers to a competitor.

Phone and website

Use a local phone number that matches your website and other directories — a tracked number is fine as long as it is consistent. Link to the most relevant page on your site, not always just the homepage. A plumber should link to the plumbing services page; a dentist should link to the new-patient page.

Services

Fill in every service you offer with a short, accurate description. Services feed directly into Google's understanding of your relevance for specific searches. A salon that lists "balayage," "keratin treatment," and "cut and color" separately will rank for each of those searches. A salon with just "Hair" listed will not.

Photos

Upload at least 10 real photos: your exterior, interior, team at work, finished jobs, and products. Businesses with photos get significantly more click-through than those without. Update photos regularly — a profile with fresh photos from this month signals active management. Never use stock photos; customers notice and it damages trust.

Business description

Write a 250-word description that explains what you do, who you serve, where you are, and what makes you different. Include your primary service and area naturally — do not keyword-stuff. This description appears in the profile sidebar and feeds AI-generated summaries about your business.

Reviews

Recent reviews with owner responses are a direct ranking signal and the single biggest conversion factor. Ask every satisfied customer the same week you serve them. Respond to every review — positive reviews with a personalized thank-you, negative reviews with a calm, professional reply. Never offer incentives for reviews or gate them.
